With beaches such as Sandsend and Saltburn a short drive away, there are plenty of sea side days out. The Cleveland Way Coastal Path offers breathtaking views of the North Yorkshire coastline, where walkers will encounter quant fishing villages such as Staithes and Runswick Bay. Head to Whitby by car (16 miles) or by train on the Esk Valley Line from Castleton Moor Station, where you will find the famous Gothic ruin of Whitby Abbey with stunning views across the harbour, along with traditional shops and the best fish and chips.
The Castleton Moor train station is a short five minute walk away.
There are five trains from Castleton Moor to Whitby each day, taking around forty-five minutes through scenic villages in the Esk Valley.
What to see in Whitby
Whitby is home to the famous Whitby Abbey (English Heritage), known for its connection to Dracula. Enjoy a climb up the 199 steps towards the Abbey, and St. Mary's Church, where you can enjoy stunning views of the harbour - or take a leisurely trip on one of Whitby's Coastal Cruises.
Situated on the Yorkshire Coast Whitby has a long stretch of sandy beach to stroll along, taking you all the way to nearby village of Sandsend. Explore the beach for fossils or walk along the pier for beautiful views of the sea.
